OTA Executive Director
Mr. DeTemple has been the Executive Director of the Ohio Township Association since 2010. The OTA was formed in 1928 to promote and preserve township government in Ohio. The OTA has over 5,000 active members and 4,000 associate members. His responsibilities include managing the organization, reporting to the Board of Directors, tracking state and federal legislation of interest to townships and filing amicus briefs in cases of interest to townships.
Mr. DeTemple graduated from the Ohio State University in 1979 with a B.A. in History. In 1982, he graduated from American University’s Washington College of Law with a J.D. degree. He was admitted to the practice of law in Ohio that same year.
From 1982 to 1997 Mr. DeTemple was an attorney in private practice, representing public school districts all over Ohio, in matters as varied as collective bargaining, personal injury defense litigation, and general counsel on matters such as the Sunshine Law, public records, tax and bond issues, and ethics.
In 1997, he joined the Ohio School Boards Association, working in the legal office and assisting with executive searches. In 2000, Mr. DeTemple became Chief Counsel to the Ohio Department of Education, reporting directly to the State Board of Education and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. His responsibilities included managing all litigation involving the Department of Education and overseeing the administrative rule making process. In 2010, he left that position to become the Executive Director of the Ohio Township Association.
